# Paraphrasing tool that keeps your meaning

Textlume rewrites your sentences and paragraphs in new words, then checks names, numbers, dates and quotes against what you pasted. Pick one of eight modes, and each one sets a matching register for you.

## How it works

Know what bothers you about the passage first. That's what you'll judge the rewrite by.

1. **Paste or upload**
Paste your text or upload a Word document or PDF of up to 2 MB.
2. **Pick a mode**
Each mode does a different job. Pick the one you need.
3. **Run it**
Press Paraphrase and read the rewrite against your original.
4. **Read the highlights**
Changed sentences are shaded and changed words underlined. Tap a sentence to see what it said before.
5. **Redo one sentence**
If one line still sounds off, tap it. Rewrite this sentence redoes that line alone.
6. **Copy or keep it**
Turn the marks off with Hide changes, then press Copy. Signed in, each run is saved to your history unless you switch history off.

## Frequently asked questions

### How does a paraphrasing tool work?

It writes your text again in different words and sentence shapes while keeping the meaning. Ours keeps your order, compares the facts with your original and rewrites once more if one changed. Every change is marked.

### Is this paraphrasing tool free?

Yes. Textlume gives you one free run a day on up to 125 words, with no account and no card. Free runs use Standard or Fluency. Paid plans add the other modes and a monthly word allowance.

### Can teachers tell if I used a paraphrasing tool?

Often, yes. Teachers notice when a paper stops sounding like you, or when a borrowed idea has no citation. Some schools also run an [AI detector](/). Understand the source first, polish wording you already own and cite what you borrowed.

### Is using a paraphrasing tool plagiarism?

Rewording someone else's idea without credit is plagiarism, whether a tool helped or not. Paraphrasing your own draft is just editing. With a source, make sure you can explain it before you rewrite it, then cite it. Check your school's policy on AI tools as well.

### Do I still have to cite a source I paraphrased?

Yes. A paraphrase changes the words, not who had the idea. APA style asks for the author and year, like (Lee, 2019), and MLA style for the author and page, like (Lee 42). Quotation marks are only for words you copy exactly.

### Will the paraphraser change my numbers or names?

It's told not to, and then it checks. Numbers and quotations are compared with your original, along with the exact spelling of names. A mismatch sends the paraphrase back for one more try. If a fact still can't be confirmed, the result says so.

### What is an example of paraphrasing?

Take “The store closed early because a storm knocked out the power.” A paraphrase: “A storm cut the power, so the store shut early.” The cause and the result are both still there.

### Can I rephrase just one sentence?

Yes. Paste the sentence alone, or paraphrase the paragraph and tap the one sentence that still feels off. Rewrite this sentence writes a new version of that line and leaves the rest alone. Each redo counts as a run on your plan.

### Does it work in languages other than English?

Yes. It handles 15 languages, among them German, Spanish, French, Korean and Japanese. It writes in the language you pasted and doesn't translate. If it guesses the language wrong, set it under Language before you run.

### Is a paraphraser the same as a reword generator?

Not quite. Older reword generators swap single words for synonyms, which is how “big cat” turns into “large-scale feline.” An AI rewriter like ours rebuilds the sentence around its meaning, so the result reads like an edit rather than a thesaurus accident.

### How many words can I paraphrase at once?

On the free plan, one run covers 125 words, and only that first part of a longer paste gets paraphrased. Paid plans take up to 20,000 words at a time. They draw on a monthly allowance of 10,000 words on Basic, 25,000 on Plus or 50,000 on Pro, which resets on your plan's monthly renewal day.
