# A free grammar checker that shows its work

Paste a draft and Textlume marks grammar, spelling and punctuation mistakes, says what each one is, and offers a fix you apply with one click. Grammar checks are free and unlimited, with or without an account.

## How it works

The grammar checker reads your text as you type. You decide which fixes go in.

1. **Paste or type your text**
One sentence or a full draft. The check starts a moment after you stop typing.
2. **Read the issue list**
Each issue is underlined in your text and listed under its category. Pick a category above the list to clear one kind at a time.
3. **Fix or dismiss**
Click a suggestion to apply it, or use Fix all for a whole category. Dismiss drops a single flag. Ignore word leaves a name you spelled on purpose alone.
4. **Read it once more**
Press Check again and read the changed sentences aloud. A correct sentence can still say the wrong thing.

## Frequently asked questions

### How can I check if my sentence is correct?

Paste it into Textlume and the check runs by itself. Each flag names the problem and offers a fix. Read the fix inside your sentence before you accept it, since a correct change can still shift your meaning.

### Can I ask an AI chatbot to fix my grammar instead?

You can, and you'll get a corrected version back. A chatbot tends to rewrite more than you asked, though, and won't list what it changed. Textlume flags each issue in place, so you see every change and keep your own wording.

### Isn't the checker in my word processor enough?

For a quick draft it often is. A separate checker helps when you want every issue listed by category, or when you write somewhere with no built-in check, like an application portal. Paste the text into Textlume, fix it and copy it back.

### How do I know if a grammar checker is accurate?

Test it on mistakes you know the answer to. Write a sentence with a misspelling and a verb that disagrees with its subject, then see what Textlume catches and whether the fixes are right. Watch for false flags on names and technical terms too.

### What's the difference between grammar checks and clarity suggestions?

Grammar checks follow fixed language rules and catch errors. Clarity suggestions come from a language model and target sentences that are correct but wordy or vague. Grammar checks on Textlume are free. Clarity comes with paid plans, with a set number a day.

### Which languages does the grammar checker support?

Textlume checks grammar in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Polish, Russian and Arabic. Turkish isn't covered. The checker reads the language from your text, and you can change it in the editor. For English it also tells American from British spelling.

### Do I need an account to check grammar?

No. Grammar checks run without signing up, and no plan limits how many you run. The one exception is an abuse guard of 500 checks per IP address a day. A free account adds history. Clarity suggestions need a paid plan.

### Is this an AI grammar checker?

Partly. The spelling and grammar check runs on an open-source grammar engine that we host ourselves, and nothing changes without your click. On paid plans an AI clarity pass sits on top. It drops any suggestion that would alter a number, a name or a quotation.

### Is my text saved when I check grammar?

If you aren't signed in, nothing is saved. Signed in, the text and its issues go into your history, where you can delete one entry or all of them. Text sent for clarity suggestions goes to an AI service that may not keep it or train on it.

### Can I check a whole essay or long report at once?

Yes, up to 20,000 words at a time. A long text is checked in parts, with a progress line while they come back. If a part doesn't come back in time, it's shaded, and Check again retries it.
